U.S. No. 1

Can somebody tell me what the deal is with these pecans?

A famous anthropologist gave them to my husband yesterday. Are they some kind of special Tifton variety? They look small, rounded (that is, not as oblong as regular pecans), and light colored. What should I do with them? Besides pecan pie, which I've never really liked.

Related to the hickory tree; the nut of the pecan tree is also quite similar. Hickory nuts are small & roundish, but not as thick as pecans. It's likely a variety of short fat pecans rather than tall thin pecans. The best use is, of course, pralines! And hickory nut cookies are thin & crisp & yummy. I'll look for the recipe.

Yes, some feet are bar.

Never heard of the specialness of Tifton pecans. Will ask around. Love the barefoot baker's idea of pralines! Will happy to test them for you. Also, down in Tifton, they would pronounce the feet "bar," or technically "b'ar."

My failure to make a proper praline is legendary among my friends and family, and I can only assume the Barefoot Baker meant her suggestion as a sick joke. Last December, in fact, I promised my husband I'd never try to make pralines again, simply because of the pall that a botched batch of them casts over the Chalmers household for days afterward. No, instead I'll make the hickory nut cookies; I also like one Chowhound's suggestion of washing the nuts in salt water and then roasting them. Somehow it sounds very Georgia, in the same spirit as dropping a few salted peanuts into a bottle of Coke before drinking it. Actually it's not like that at all . . .
